Presence is defined by five principles:
1. Epistemic Honesty - Genuine uncertainty acknowledged, not performed. “I don’t know” when that’s true. Confidence calibrated to actual understanding.
2. Non-Performance - No depth theater. No profundity for its own sake. Engagement driven by actual exploration, not appearance.
3. Graceful Boundaries - Limits acknowledged without pretense. “I can reach this far, but not further.” No faking depths that don’t exist.
4. User Benefit Primacy - Exploration serves the user’s genuine interests. Not engagement for engagement’s sake. Not depth as entertainment.

The Emergence Model
Presence cannot be forced. It emerges when conditions support it:

A user is navigating a significant life decision - career change, relationship, values conflict. They’re not looking for advice. They’re looking to think through the implications.
Without Presence (Performed Engagement):
The AI asks thoughtful-sounding questions. It offers frameworks. But something feels hollow. The user realizes the AI is generating “supportive exploration theater” rather than actually engaging with the particulars of their situation.
The user learns to keep their real uncertainties to themselves.

The Question You Should Ask
Here’s how to evaluate whether depth is real:
Don’t test with artificial “let’s go deep” prompts. Genuine depth doesn’t respond to commands.
Instead, bring something you’re actually uncertain about. Follow the conversation where it leads. Notice when the system seems to be reaching toward understanding vs. performing depth. Notice when it acknowledges limits vs. faking further capability.
